Kids' Summer Camp 2023
Summer camp was a full week of sun, fun, and learning a traditional broadsword form from the Shaolin Temple.
Summer Camp Day 1: We kicked off our 2023 Summer Camp for kids by starting to learn the broadsword form in Frick Park! After lunch, students worked on dying flags their broadsword using a traditional "shibori" dying technique while our older campers started a great discussion on the qualities of good leadership.
Summer Camp Day 2: We finished customizing our Broadswords with colored grip tape and got in LOTS of great practice after we walked to Koenig Field in the morning. The afternoon brought more great discussions on leadership, the martial arts, and our Shaolin Five Animals rules.
Summer Camp Day 3: This was the first day the kids got to practice with their finished broadswords with their flags attached. It was a beautiful day at Koenig to squeeze in some practice before our annual water battle.
Summer Camp Day 4: It's PIZZA DAY! The morning was spent in Frick Park practicing and then a hike through the park to the Frick Park Environmental Center. We took to the streets in the afternoon for more practice of the broadsword form - it’s not an easy one - and a great leadership discussion led by Sensei Guillermo.
Summer Camp Day 5: What an AWESOME finish to this year's Summer Camp! We enjoyed donuts in the morning and then went down to Koenig Field to set up, practice for our final demonstration for the families and parents, and break some boards. Everyone was impressed - including Master Steve and all of our senseis at how well the kids learned the form in such a short amount of time.
